It is illegal for an employer to take any adverse employment action (e.g., firing, discipline, demotion) against an employee who:

  • Complains in good faith about discrimination or harassment based on sex, sexual orientation, race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, marital status, or any other category protected by law;
  • Participates in an investigation of discrimination or harassment;
  • Requests an accommodation based on disability or religion; or
  • Requests family or medical leave.

Many federal and state laws contain anti-retaliation provisions that protect employees who exercise their rights in the workplace or who take part in protected activities.
